This award, presented by the Georgia Department of Education’s School Nutrition Division (GaDOE SND) in collaboration with the Georgia Department of Agriculture, University of Georgia Extension, and the Georgia Department of Public Health, highlights the district’s commitment to integrating farm-to-school initiatives that connect students with fresh, locally sourced foods.
Banks County School Food and Nutrition Director Nicole Blalock shared her excitement.
“Our School Food and Nutrition Department is committed every day to providing the best for our students, but we could not have achieved this without our community of local farmers who played a pivotal role in earning this award,” said Nicole Blalock, Director of Food and Nutrition for Banks County Schools. “Our community is what makes our system, and seeing our students excited to eat healthy meals every day is truly rewarding. We are honored to receive this award.”
The Georgia Farm to School Award celebrates schools across the state that excel in providing students with access to nutritious, locally-grown food, incorporating agricultural education into the classroom, and fostering sustainable food practices. Banks County Schools’ Food and Nutrition Department has demonstrated outstanding efforts to bring these ideals into the cafeteria and classroom, promoting both health and agricultural literacy for students.
Throughout the 2023-2024 school year, Banks County Schools has partnered with local farmers and agricultural organizations to bring fresh produce directly into school kitchens, benefiting students with meals rich in essential nutrients. The program supports local agriculture and includes educational initiatives designed to teach students about the origins of their food, the importance of nutritious eating habits, and the value of sustainable practices.
